Shortly after the founding of Windsor, in 1641 John Bissell established a ferry to transfer cows from Windsor to the east bank of the Connecticut River for grazing. The ferry led to the settlement of East Windsor Hill in what is today the town of South Windsor. In 1658, Bissell built a house on the South Windsor side of the crossing, where it still stands today. The ferry continued operating until 1917.
