East Facade of the Connecticut State Capitol: The Revolutionary War and the Founding of the Republic
The east facade depicts individuals associated with the Revolutionary War and the founding of the Republic. The sculpture on this façade was created first because this side of the building was the first to be completed. When looking at the Statues, from left to right, Thomas Hooker (1586- 1617), Roger Sherman (1721- 1793), Jonathan Trumbull (1710- 1785), John Davenport (1597- 1669). Below the four statues are six medallion heads, representing: (from left to right) John Barlow (1776- 1812), George Berkley (1685- 1753), Horace Bushnell (1802- 1876), Noah Webster (1758- 1843), John Trumbull (1756- 1843), Jonathan Edwards (1703- 1758). Below the medallion heads are three tympana (left to right): Hooker’s March to Hartford, The Charter Oak, Davenport Preaching in New Haven.
