Bill Barrett (b. 1934) created “Guardian” to embody: “The primitive aspects of the court system and our fumbling approach to civilizing ourselves.” “Guardian” is a fifteen-foot-tall abstract assemblage of aluminum plates which include a partially abstracted shield and arm, meant to symbolize strength and protection. “Guardian” is placed near Connecticut’s Criminal Courts Buildings at the corner of Lafayette and Russ Streets in Hartford and was a 1984 commission from the Connecticut Commission for the Arts. This abstract embodiment of the “guardian of law and order” was completed and installed in 1986.
