Evelyn Beatrice Longman

Evelyn Longman's 1927 Spanish-American War Monument in Bushnell Park commemorates the patriotism and valor of Hartford men who served during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The bronze figure is an allegory of Victory that harkens back to Hellenistic Greek traditions of remembrance.

Stop #2: Phoenix

Phyllis Baker Hammond

In 1989, artist Phyllis Hammond created Phoenix at the request of the Connecticut Commission for the Arts. It was placed outside the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection which was the old Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Building at 79 Elm Street, Hartford.

Stop #4: Gallaudet Memorial at Original Site of American School for the Deaf

Frances Laughlin Wadsworth

Frances Wadsworth’s 1953 statue was commissioned by the National Association for the Deaf in an effort to commemorate the 1817 founding of the American School for the Deaf, the first institution for the education of the handicapped in the country. The Statue depicts the school’s first pupil, Alice Cogswell.

Women artists flourished in Connecticut in the mid-20th Century. Most prominent was Evelyn Beatrice Longman who has four works in Greater Hartford. She made the Spanish American War Monument in 1926 in a studio on the campus of Loomis School in Windsor, CT where her husband Nathanial Batchelder was Headmaster.
